What this paper is about
This paper will enable students to experiment with applying design principles and research to problem-solving exercises that explore interactive media design. Students will develop skill and expertise in the range of software required for the completion of assignments, and designing for interactive media.
This paper introduces Communication Design and Media Design major students to the roles they will play in the development of interactive media and interactive environments.
How this paper will be taught
Through lectures, workshops, critiques, and assignments, students will develop their knowledge of layout, typography, interaction, usability, storyboarding and the use of design tools for the design of interactive media.
You are required to attend all class sessions and participate in any class discussions and critiques, meet all requirements of the handouts and present your work professionally. During assigned work times, you are expected to be in class working and participating.
Much of the learning in this paper is through doing and collaborating. This paper is designed to allow you to learn from the academic staff as well as from other members of the class.
Studios
All studio sessions must be attended.
Studio attendance is compulsory and required for students to be successful in this paper. Attendance will be recorded.
Students must attend BOTH the Tuesday and Friday Studio in-person.
Studios provide opportunities for students to gain assistance from tutors, graduate assistants, or demonstrators on the graded aspects of the paper.
This will take the form of:
- group and individual instruction to assist with assignments
- group and individual assignment critique
- group and individual assignment feedback
- your opportunity to clarify questions about this paper from the lecturer, tutor, graduate assistant, or demonstrator
Ensure that you have any material you need for the studio ready (e.g. printed) before class begins.
The first two hours of each studio will generally be used for instruction and group activities, while the final hour will be for independent learning. Students should expect formal presentations will extend to the full studio time to accommodate all students.
Graded assignment presentations & submissions will take place during studios at various times during the Trimester. These will be advised in assessment briefs and will be compulsory for students to attend in-person to receive a grade.
